Thousand Camel Festival 2024 Feb 1-3

Thousand Camel Festival is a wonderful late winter festival and cultural introduce Mongolian camel herders.
The Festival has been organized since 1997 after its first initiation to protect and increase the two-humped Bactrian camel population, help the nomads to exchange experiences, increase the benefit of camels, improve locals’ participation in the natural protection and recovery, develop winter tourism, support the livelihood of the locals, introduce the camel herder Gobi desert nomads’ culture locally and internationally. The Camel Festival is not a tourist event anymore. This is one of the biggest celebrations and festivals the Gobi desert nomads prepare and excitedly wait. The Camel Festival has a significant influence on the value of the camels. Head of the Gobi desert camels has increased from 192.000 to 460.000 nationwide. The camel head grows slow as camels colt after 2 years. The Camel Festival of 2016 was an exceptional celebration - over 6000 camels and 10.000 people gathered. The Guinness Record book registered the 1200 two-humped camel race organized on the Gobi desert steppes.

Overview

The Thousand camel festival is organized in the Gobi desert in order to protect preserve the Bactrian camel population. The Main events are camel polo, parade of camel riders, performance by traditional Mongolian musicians and dancers and the best dressed couple competition. Also you can visit significant paleontological sites of the Gpbi desert.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Small Rock Formation

Drive to Baga Gazriin Chuluu/ small rock formation /the first stop on the Gobi trip list is Baga Gazriin Chuluu (more commonly known as the Small Stones of Middle Gobi). It is granite formation in the middle of the Mongolian Sandy plane. At the food of the formation we will visit the remains of a small monastery named Delgeriin Choir.

DAY 2-3

Bayanzag Flaming cliffs

Red Flaming Cliffs Bayanzag a saxual forest and area of red cliffs “Bayanzag” which have been formed from the erosion of the sand and rock over many thousands of years. A lot of dinosaurs’ findings such as skeleton & dinosaur’ eggs have been found there. Visit Khavtsgait, where some of the most precious petroglyphs of the Gobi. Camel festival begins in Bulgan sum, start by a parade of camel riders.

DAY 4

Khongor sand dune

After breakfast, we will drive towards Khongor sand dunes. that extend along the northern side of Sevrei and Zoolun mountain ranges, explore the area, climbing one of the dunes affords the energetic traveler with an unforgettable experience of endless vistas across a sea of daffodil-colored sand. Bactrian (two humped) camel ride experience.

DAY 5

Yoliin Am

Yol Valley - You will be driven to the valley of Yolyn Am.The valley begins from Zuun Saikhan Mountain, a branch of the Gurvan Saikhan mountain system, and stretches over 10 km. It is completely shaded from the sun in some parts by high cliff walls. The beauty of the valley, combined with the sound of vultures– this is an experience not to be missed.

DAY 6

White Stupa Tsagaan Suvarga

Tsagaan suvarga- White Stupa - Driving through Gobi desert will give you an exotic view of the desert – with boundless view of horizons, rare species of mammals and plants. On the way you can take the photo of wonderful spots, running gazelles, grassing camels.

Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast, Drive back to Ulaanbaatar, arrive by 4 PM, have lunch on the way at local restaurant.

Your tour guide will be English speaking local Mongolian person who will be giving you all sorts of explanation and interpretations of your need during the trip, along with all sorts of information about Mongolian custom, culture, history and so on.

Accommodation

A traditional round shaped dwelling that specifically customized with simple bedding and furniture. Some of Gers may have equipped fully sanitary facilities with hot shower in conformity with the international tourist service standard. However, some tourist camps may have public restrooms and bathing.

Accommodation: First and last night in Ulaanbaatar city will be staying at Shangri - La hotel for your convenience. During the journey, you will stay in a single, twin or double room/ger (yurt) (where applicable). Single occupancy may not be possible during the Naadam festival (July 5th -15th) at ger camps. At community-based camps and ger homestays, single occupancy is subject to availability.
